BOMSS 2018 conference chat

BOMSS 2018

The BOMSS 2018 scientific meeting took place on 25th and 26th January. It was a great opportunity to receive scientific and political updates about bariatric surgery in the UK and beyond.

Several leaders and friends of #obsmuk attended the meeting and led the way regarding publicising the conference and highlighting some of the important research and updates that have been presented in the conference.

To continue the conversation and to ensure some of the important topics are discussed and communicated to a wider audience, #obsmuk invites everyone to a twitter chat (on 7th Feb at 8pm GMT). Please join us!

The topics that we wish to discuss.

1)      Continuing decline (relative and absolute) in number of bariatric operations in the UK. What are the reasons? and the solutions?

2)      Tier 3 weight management services are sometimes considered as one of the reasons for reduction in the number of bariatric operations. However, tier 3 is a vital service for those who do not wish to pursue surgery. It is also, for the foreseeable future, an essential component of the pre-bariatric surgery journey in the UK. There are many examples of excellent tier 3 services around the country that we need to learn from. How can we do tier 3 well?

3)      Obesity and advanced obesity related liver disease: How can we diagnose advanced liver disease prior to surgery? When advanced liver disease is diagnosed, what should we do?

4)      Improving outcomes in bariatric surgery: How can it be achieved? Reducing complication rate? Choosing the right operation? Utilising endoscopic treatments?

5)      Social media and obesity: How can we harness the power of social media in the fight against obesity? What is the role of groups led by enthusiasts like #obsmuk? What is the role of learned organisations and associations?

We are looking forward to a great discussion!
